Sample Itinerary

Day 1: CuZco

We’ll change planes in Lima and board our 50-minute spectacular flight over the Andes Mountains to Cuzco.  Upon arrival we will be introduced to the illustrious history of the Inca civilization. A city tour will take us down Cuzco’s cobbled streets and narrow passageways with brightly painted balconies overhead.  Our visit includes the historic Plaza de Armas, the Coricancha, the Inca’s Sun Temple, the Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman, and the ceremonial pools of Tambo Machay.

Day 2: Sacred Valley

Today’s adventure begins in the village of Pisac, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley.  We will stroll around the artisansʼ market, which sells a variety of foods, including guinea pig, and colorful handicrafts.  After the market, we will embark on a one hour hike ascending the surrounding hillside to the largest fortress-city complex of the Incas and one of the largest of ancient America.  The agricultural terraces that we’ll pass by were constructed by the Incas and are still in use today.  Our guide will lead us on a walking tour through all the ruins, including the Temple of the Sun and bathhouses.

Day 3: Huayacocha

In the morning, we will traverse around the Sacred Valley to Huayacocha Community, located on plains of the Pampa de Anta region at 11,000 feet above sea level. Surrounded by the awe-inspiring, glacier-capped mountains of the Sacred Valley, Huayacocha is home to more than fifty Quechua families who live off the land.  The community is eager to welcome us and assist us on our service project during the next three days.

Community Service Project: In Huayacocha, families cook in their homes over an open fire without sufficient ventilation.  As a result, parents and children live and breathe in smoke-filled homes, which leads to a host of respiratory illnesses, eye infections, and other health problems.  Our Clean Stove Project allows us to work directly with the families of this community to create a healthier living environment.  We will build platforms and brick foundations, and then install the stoves and ceramic chimneys. During down time, participants may play soccer, teach English to the children in the community, or go for a swim in the nearby lake.

Day 4: Huayacocha

Continue building clean stoves.

Day 5: Huayacocha

In the afternoon we will conclude the Clean Stove Project and have a celebratory farewell dinner with community members. We will participate in a traditional Andean spiritual ceremony and give an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and mountain spirits.

Day 6 - 8: Inca Trail

The Inca Trail is one of the greatest treks in the world because it combines stunning natural surroundings, including distinct ecological zones from high deserts to Andean cloud forests, and mysterious archeological sites half covered by jungle overgrowth.  We will hike through valleys and over high passes on our way to Machu Picchu.  The high point of the trail is Dead Woman’s Pass, which is 13,766 ft above sea level.

Day 9: Inca Trail/Machu Picchu

After a very early wake-up and breakfast, we will embark on the final leg of the trek to Machu Picchu.  We will arrive Untipunku or "Gate of the Sun" in time to watch the sun pour over and illuminate Machu Picchu.  After we enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchuʼs majestic palace and temples at sunrise, we will finally take the journey into the Lost City of the Inca!  We will explore these extraordinary ruins and visit the industrial area, the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, ceremonial fountains and baths, and the Sacred Plazas.  After an exhilarating day, we will take a well deserved soak in the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes.

Day 10: Aguas Calientes / U.S.

We will catch an early train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco in order to catch our flights home on time.  Don’t forget to share your photos when you get home!
